Daniel Roswell @ 8:41 pmCrime Pays, According to one UK “Paper”
Filed under: Industry News, Microsoft, Nintendo, PC, Sony | Comments (0)
A British Newspaper is offering money for anyone who has a story to tell about gaming turning them into criminals.
This is undoubtedly in the wake of the Byron report and the imminent release of GTA IV towards the end of April, and unfortunately speaks volumes to me about the current climate we live in, where a newspaper would rather pay for sensationalism than bother to do some research.
An advertisement, found here, is requesting that any resident living in the UK who has turned to crime as a result of computer games to come forward and tell all, for their troubles these individuals will be paid hundreds of pounds. The exact newspaper responsible is not known, but fingers have already been pointing at the usual suspects of the British tabloids.
It’s a real shame that words like impartial and unbiased are not words these so called newspapers seem interested in using, or spending their money researching these so-called links into gaming and criminal activities. I also think that it’s ironic that a newspaper is also willing to fund potential criminal activities in order to sully Grand Theft Auto, a game based around criminal activities.

A Demo for Sherlock Holmes VS Arsène Lupin is available from the following locations, being a fan of the original works by Sir Arthur Conan-Doyle I am both intrigued and apprehensive about a Sherlock Holmes game. Especially since it involves not only the literary work of Sir Conan-Doyle but also French writer Maurice Leblanc, who created the gentleman thief Arsène Lupin.

Mike Ballan @ 10:04 pmUK Game ratings set to be overhauled!!
Filed under: Latest News | Comments (0)Today saw the publication of an independant report commissioned by the UK Government raising the debate on game ratings and which has called for an overhaul in the way that Great Britain rates its games.
Ok, I know what your thinking already - another report trying to stamp down on violence, foul language and sex. But actually this report is ok and even sensible at times too (that’s probably because its independant of politicians!).
Dr Tanya Byron’s (a Psychologist specialising in Child behaviour and the author of the report) overall view is that more games need to be rated by official bodies to stop younger people getting their hands on inappropriate games. One of the key recommendations she makes is to lower the statutory age at which games have to go before the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) to 12 rather than the current system which see’s games going before the BBFC if they contain sexual activity or gross violence.
So why? Well Dr Tanya want to give parents a clearer view on game ratings so they can make easier choices about the games their children play. And how does she intend to do this - well she wants all games to display the BBFC rating on the front of all games with the PEGI (the European rating system) on the back.
Now I’m not sure whether this is the most sensible solution but will give a bit more consistency. I personally believe that having two systems just adds complication to the system and wont make things any clearer. Surely it would be better to have one system which is clearly advertised on games - and I’m sure this view would be shared by many game stores and manufacturers.
The author also addresses probably one of the biggest questions: “does violent content in games have a potential influence on aggressive behaviour”. And her assessment is encouraging. Dr Byron suggests that there is mixed views on this issue however that the correlation between playing violent video games and aggressive behaviour in the real world, but this does not prove that one causes the other and that there is usually a number of other factors involved.
So what next for this report and the recommendations. Well Ministers have already pre-empted the formal consultation and said they intend to implement all the recommendations. If this does go ahead, expect to see changes to the way games are rated in Summer 2010.
Steve Harry @ 10:07 pmIntroducing… the T-Charge One
Filed under: Latest News | Comments (0)
Third party peripheral manufacturer, Thurstmaster, has produced a couple of cool looking new storage cradles for the Wii and whilst there is no shortage of peripherals to store and charge wii-motes, this one looks pretty cool.
The first peripheral - nicknamed the T-Charge One - allows you to both store and charge a Wii-mote, and offers further storage for a nunchuck and a classic controller. A pretty handy peripheral I think you’ll agree….!
If that wasn’t cool enough, you will also be able to buy a T-Charge Duo, which - yes you guessed it - allows you to store twice as many wii-motes as the T-Charge One - however unfrotunately the Duo does not offer any further storage for nunchucks or classic controllers.
If you like what you see then keep your eye on the Thurstmaster website in April to get your hands on these new - pretty cool - products!

So would you drink something called “Jungle Juice” I wouldn’t and what do you think it tastes of anyway bananas or maybe Mangos? I don’t think this drink is going to steal any market shares from the likes of Coca-cola but it is a fun looking drink even if it does smell of bubble-gum.
If you would like to buy some of Donkey Kong’s Jungle Juice, you can find it in New York’s Nintendo World Store, sorry if you live outside of the US of A but i’m sure they will make there way to you some day.

Sheik’s special moves don’t have the power to send the opponent flying, or heap large mounds of damage on the enemy. This is, of course, in line with her character.
Sheik’s style instead relies on her great speed and mid-air attacks, both of which help her torment the opponent. As such, it seems sensible enough to say that you’ll use her special moves mostly as a means of keeping the enemy in check. (Read on …)

Filed under: Industry News, Latest News | Comments (0)
A study by the University of California has shown that computer games can aid in the development of social and community building skills and not hinder them as a lot of people believe.
Observations carried out on children interacting with computer games showed that though only one child could play at a time, the children negotiated turns and gave each other advice about how to play the game. The Children exhibited a great deal of executive planning skills and complex social negotiations without any guidance or interference from adults.
Unfortunately the article is very brief and does not go into a lot of detail, hopefully when it is published shortly a more complete version will be available.
