Minae Matsukawa Interview
Filed under: Nintendo | Comments (0)One of the things I love about the Nintendo DS is the unique games you can play on it, not only can you play as everybody’s favourite plumber; you can play a surgeon or even an attorney at law.
It might be the DS’s success, or it might be down to cheap game carts, but it seems the DS is leading the charge for taking risks with gaming ideas, I mean seriously an attorney? Who would have thought that would have been a fun game to play?
Fortunately the Ace Attorney games are fun and Nintendo of Europe has sat down with series producer Minae Matsukawa to find out how they came up with all those colourful characters and storylines.

Filed under: Apparel, Latest News, Retro & Arcade | Comments (1)Continuing my quest fashionably geeky apparel I’ve managed to find Lowrez, a German website that probably has the largest collection of t-shirts in one place.
The t shirts are divided into for categories:
Pixel Designs “First there was the pixel. It’s the smallest part of a videogame-screen. Before there was the 3D-age with it’s polygonal characters and objects, these things were drawn pixel for pixel with love. Good artists at this period were able to fill a 16 x 16 pixel small sprite with live and charm.”
Scanline designs “Since the video line is drawing all images line by line on the screen, so called scanlines appear while displaying low resolution images. This is due to the fact that you can still see the spacing bewtween those lines. The designs shown here are visualizing this effect at a larger scale.”
Vector Designs “In vectorgraphic games the objects are drawn directly by the electrobeam of the monitor on the screen and not line by line like others monitors are doing it. This creates a picture with lines and dots on a black background, which has its own charm. The advantage of this technique is that the objects can be rotated and scaled in unlimited ways, which wasn’t possible with the low resolution pixelsprites at this time. Successful games of this era were “Asteroids”, “Tempest”, and “Battle Zone”.”
Retro Designs This section is made of retro cool, but with a funky modern twist and a hint humour too

I like eating and I like playing games, so for someone to come up with a dinner table with a game embedded in it is a fantastic idea.
Using some 2,400 LED lights as well as a couple of trackpads, Designer by Moritz Waldemeyer has given the seminal Atari game a very tactile upgrade. I suspect this table was insipred by Air Hockey tables that were once taking up space in our precious Arcades, which in turn would have been inspired by Pong in the first place, a bit like an Arcade circle of life.
The table is part of MoMA’s Design & the Elastic Mind Exhibition which is show case for unique interface devices.

Mike Ballan @ 1:07 pmChristophe Heral Confirmed To Score Beyond Good & Evil 2.
Filed under: Latest News, Microsoft, Sony | Comments (0)
More good news for BG&E fans, Christophe Heral has spoken to Music4Games that he has been hired to score Beyond Good & Evil 2.
In an email to Music4Games Christophe said “Yes, yes, of course :) Michel [Ancel] trusts me again to create the music of his graphic universe,” after Ubisoft’s official unveiling of Beyond Good & Evil 2 at Ubidays in Paris. It looks like BG&E2 is going to be the next big thing in the gaming community, hopefully there will be more news soon and some teaser trailers too.

Daniel Roswell @ 11:09 amBeyond Good & Evil 2 Teaser
Filed under: Microsoft, Sony, Video | Comments (0)There was talk of BG&E a while back by Michael Ancel, but at the time Ubisoft hadn’t (apparently) committed to the project.
During Ubidays Ubisoft has released a teaser trailer of the now official game and judging by the set-up this is the first of many teasers for BG&E2, titled -1- The Pig it is centered around Jade’s companion Payj.
It is claimed that the teaser has been made using the game’s engine, which reveals even though Ubisoft have been reluctant to finance the project someone has been working on it for a while now. The teaser shows both Jade and Payj stranded in the desert with a broken down hover car, not much happens but instead of ruining the surprise just watch it yourself here.
I’m not quite sure what to make of the graphics, sure they are amazing but it all appears to be a bit too photo-realistic, I really hope the game retains the look of the original because it was part of the charm.

NCS Product Synopsis Updated on May 20, 2008
©NCSX Nintendo’s Micro VS System line-up was released in Japan around the same time as the Game & Watch handhelds. In the case of today’s Donkey Kong Hockey game, Nintendo shipped the product in November of 1984 or an impressive 24 years ago. Both Micro VS and Game & Watch form-factors featured simple LCD graphics, simple game play, and a simple design that’s innocuous, understated, rounded and not forgetting awesome.
Game Play and Functions
Donkey Kong and Mario playing hockey!! - What more can a girl ask for out of life?!?!
In Donkey Kong Hockey, players control Mario and attempt to score goals against Donkey Kong. You can also swap to two player mode by selecting the Game B option. Whomever is the first to score 10 goals wins the match. But its not that easy! - be on the look out for the referee and “Crazy Spots” that make it a wild game, well maybe not wild, but its Mario & Donkey Kong…hello!
(If the ball passes through “crazy spots”, it will speed up and change course)
And if the Hockey action’s not enough, it also includes a handy clock function with alarm, genius. Oh & lets not forget the retractable cord on the controllers, just like playdoh peoples hair.
Sale Offering
You can pick up one of these, factory packaged, and in mint condition for US$55.90 per unit which includes free shipping by UPS Ground within the U.S……… get me the phone.
Wii Balance Board Surfs the Earth (Google Earth!)
Filed under: Nintendo, Video | Comments (0)I suspect that most people are using the Wii Balance Board as part of a very low impact fitness regime, if not then it’s probably being used a rather expensive doorstop.
This is not so in Germany where a group of students are using the Wii BB as an input device for Google Earth, it’s purely for entertainment purposes and I sincerely doubt this will catch on but it’s yet another example of people thinking outside the box.

Jay Garrick @ 2:19 pmCapcom Lifetime Sales
Filed under: Industry News, Latest News, Microsoft, Nintendo, Retro & Arcade, Sega, Sony | Comments (2)For a company sales figures are great because it shows you how much money you’ve made, so for Capcom these figure must be very pleasing indeed.
Tellingly though, it also shows us which games from Capcom’s cannon have proved most popular over the years. Taking an older franchise like Street Fighter or Mega Man you can see that the older titles in the series proved more popular than newer versions, with three early Mega Man games as opposed to the one Battle Network game showing up in the chart.
If that tells you anything it should be to bring back the old Mega Man. (Read on …)

Any Live Arcade title that is over six months old, has a lower than 65% Metacritic score and less than 6% conversion rate (demos upgraded to full games by users) will be removed from Live, the exact list is currently only known by Microsoft but Xbox360fanboy think they have a pretty good idea as to what will be on the list.

Mike Ballan @ 11:08 amGames Can Make Us Creative
Filed under: Industry News, Latest News, Microsoft, Nintendo, Sony | Comments (0)Studies at Penn State University suggest that computer games can aid creativity, if certain criteria are met.
S. Shyam Sundar, professor of film, video and media studies at Penn State and Elizabeth Hutton, a Penn State graduate student have been studying the effects of computer games to amplify positive social traits like creativity.
“We looked at two emotional variables: arousal and valence,” said Hutton. “Arousal is the degree of physical excitation — as measured through skin conductance — and valence, which is the range of positive or negative feeling.”
The results appear to indicate that after playing, happy or sad people are most creative, while angry or relaxed people are not. Also high or low arousal is key to creativity. In other words, medium amounts of arousal are not conducive to creativity.
“When you are highly aroused, the energy itself acts as a catalyst, and the happy mood acts as an encouragement. It is like being in a zone where you cannot be thrown off your game,” explained Sundar. A negative mood, especially when there is low arousal, brings a different kind of energy that makes a person more analytical, which is crucial to creativity as well, he added.
