The last we heard Bioshock 2 had been pushed back into next year and no one’s heard a peep from 2K Games since then. The chances are they were hiding under their duvets waiting for the expected fan backlash from the delay. That said, the backlash didn’t really happen and we all took it on the chin and accepted the inevitable. 2K Games have now poked their head out from under the duvet to tell everyone Bioshock 2 will have a worldwide launch  February 9, 2010.

Personally I found my rapture experience to be quite an enjoyable one, there were the odd flaws (most noticeably the complete lack of controller mapping), but overall it told a compelling enough story for me to continue playing. Even though we have four months and 20 days to wait, check out what to expect from the splicer enhanced sequel below.

Set approximately 10 years after the events of the original BioShock, the halls of Rapture once again echo with sins of the past. Along the Atlantic coastline, a monster has been snatching little girls and bringing them back to the undersea city of Rapture. Players step into the boots of the most iconic denizen of Rapture, the Big Daddy, as they travel through the decrepit and beautiful fallen city, chasing an unseen foe in search of answers and their own survival.

One part of the game I am still on the fence about is the multiplayer aspect of Bioshock 2, which has also received a cool response from a lot of gamers too. The following multiplayer trailer (from Mike’s earlier post) highlights exactly what to expect from the new mode, it demonstrates it will be quite frantic, but will plasmids and weapons mix as well in this sort of setting? I guess we will have to wait and see.

Multiplayer in BioShock 2 will provide a rich prequel experience that expands the origins of the BioShock fiction. Set during the fall of Rapture, players assume the role of a Plasmid test subject for Sinclair Solutions, a premier provider of Plasmids and Tonics in the underwater city of Rapture that was first explored in the original BioShock. Players will need to use all the elements of the BioShock toolset to survive, as the full depth of the BioShock experience is refined and transformed into a unique multiplayer experience that can only be found in Rapture.

BioShock 2 is currently in development at 2K Marin in collaboration with 2K Australia, Digital Extremes and 2K China for the Xbox 360, the PlayStation3 and Games for Windows LIVE.
