1990: Cue Ball as Input DeviceNobody would argue that the Wii is a fresh slant on computer games and a refreshing break from the power struggle that Microsoft and Sony are embarking on, but is the idea of gestrual controls all that new?
We have seen some dicusion about the Wiimote and where it might have evolutionary pointers from but prior to but it is not the first device to try and translate real world action into digital reaction. Taking physical manipulation monitoring as the founding principle arcade manufactures in 1990 made a machine that would track motion of a ball, be it hit with a cue or rolled or bowled. What is impressive is its accuracy and of course the fact that it happened in 1990 with 8bit technology. The video not only shows it in action but reveals how simple the design really is, what it shows is with very simple monitoring of the real world a program can effectivly be physically interacted with and people found this sort of control intuative.
