The Pixelation forum have challenges on a regular basis where by the forum members can enter works of art specific the the requirements of each challenge. This time around the criteria was to de-make a modern game to within the limitations of the graphical power of the humble Game Boy. The results speak for themselves, with all manner of games de-made including The Legend of Zelda The Twilight Princess (above), to Bioshock, Yoshi’s Story, Burnout and Boktai (shown below) all getting me excited for games that do and will never exist!
The rules for this competition was to keep witiin the basic specs for the system are as follows:
- 2-bit color (black, dark grey, light grey, white)
- 8×8 tiles
- 8×8, 8×16 and 16×8 sprites
- 1 4-color bg palette
- 2 3-color sprite palettes (that must choose from same 4 colors as the bg)
- Background tiles each get a foreground/background flag
- No more than 10 sprites per scanline on the raster
Also, a new competition is already under way to create your own Mega Man boss to the limitations of the NES. I can’t wait to see what they turn out like!
