Nintendo Tease Bright New Future With Wii U

This year Nintendo has three media briefings at E3. Their main presentation on Tuesday, a follow up software presentation on Wednesday and a pre E3 Wii U presention that has just finished (if you missed it, the full you tube video is embedded below).

So what did Nintendo have to say? Well a lot was covered in the 30 minute video but in short I believe what they wanted to say was “we listened”. Their philosophy for creating the Wii U stems from their company philosophy “creating something unique”, which they have done with the Wii U but crucially they’ve learned from mistakes made with the original Wii.

The biggest feature teased from this video is the ability to connect with fellow gamers using the internet and not just using the Wii U either, the function will be available across 3DS, PC and web enabled mobile devices too. Introduced using a very “unique” show reel with a gamer having difficulties playing a zombie game and using the Wii U’s in-built forums to not only find a solution but video chat with someone about it.

Next we have the Miiverse which the Mii plaza, but with the help of the internet to form a 3DS street pass style environment with social networking and trending style features. This will also be the first thing you see when you turn on your Wii U, telling you what your friends playing and what gamers around the world are playing.

Another surprise was the inclusion of an Xbox 360 style game pad for gamers and games that don’t necessarily fit into Nintendo’s motion or tablet gaming environment. This alone is a reassurance enough that games on the Xbox or PlayStation wont be shoe horned into Wii remote or Nunchuck configurations.

Overall I believe this has proven to be a very successful reveal and makes the next few days’ events to be a very exciting prospect indeed.

No pressure Sony, Microsoft…
