PlayStation 2 Was Most Played Of 2008

During the year that was 2008 the PlayStation 2 reigned supreme for the most played console, proving there’s still life in the old dog. For Sony it must be a moment of both pride and despair because even though they were top of the pops they were also at the bottom too, with the PlayStation 3 trailing the pack. The 360 came second and the Wii third, which even though it was the highest seller is hardly surprising due to it’s new market of non gamers.

This poll was carried in out America by renowned marketing measurement company Nielson, so even though it’s doesn’t account for the rest of the world should give a pretty good indication of what everyone else was doing too. the full results are as follows:

The “Other” accounts for any other home console, but does not include handhelds so it looks like there is still some loving for the old school Sony, Nintendo and even Sega systems. Results which were compiled between January and October of 2008 and published by Nielson can be viewed here (pdf), along with other entertainment trends, like TV music and something called the Internet.

So there you have it, I wonder what it will be like next year? I am guessing the Xbox 360 will displace the PS2 for the top spot and maybe even lose 2nd to the Wii, leaving the two Sonys to fight for third place.
