Quake Live To Feature Subscription Premium Service

Remember how Quake Live was going to be a free browser version of of Quake III Arena? Well apparently game developers id’s idea of free doesn’t actually mean the same as the sort of free you or I might think it means. During the press conference at Quake Con, John Carmack commented that id will be introducing a subscription service to Quake Live.

While this is disappointing to hear, in id’s defence Quake Live is insanely popular and I suspect the costs of running the game far out weight the revenue generated by the in-game advertising. Having said that Carmack did also mention that Quake Live will still feature a level of free online gaming, but the specifics of that, or indeed what the premium service will entail have yet to be finalised.
