Quake Live Trailer

Filed under: Latest News, PC, Video |

It’s been quite a while since we heard anything about Quake Live, id’s free online Quake III game. It almost went through E3 without even a peep. Fortunately a trailer for the game was sighted by one of Destructoid’s readership (I’m assuming from the post credit) and posted on the website.

The idea of a free version of Quake both baffles and amazes, it’s a bold move by id and will be a timely reaction to current gaming market. Off course “free” comes at a price, which in this case you pay with your senses and not your wallet. This is because all of the 30 levels being made available will carry some form of advertisement, how much of an endorsement per stage is not yet known.

From a financial stand point the game is covered from the adverts, so the ability for these companies to recoup their investment will be scrutinised (if possible). I think the real question should be if from a gamers perspective, can a game laden with adverts be as immersive as one without?

I think this issue and ultimately its success will boil down if gamers can.
