Its only natural as humans to question our very being, who are we, what are we doing here and all that jazz. What you wont find is a game questioning its purpose or wondering if it would be better suited in a different genre, that is of course unless we ask the question ourselves. Over on the Steam comunity forums, the question has been asked “What if Team Fortress 2 was not a FPS but… a fighter? or a... (read more »)
One of the most shocking events of E3 2010 has got to be when Gabe Newell strolled onto the stage right in the middle of the Sony conference. Valve promised a surprise during E3 and this was it, Valve and Sony working together and properly this time. In hindsight the thought of Valve working with Sony shouldn’t have been all that shocking, after all Valve had back-tracked on working on Macs not so long... (read more »)
The chances are, if you are a PC gamer then you’ve tried your hand at creating your own gaming content, be it level editing, character modelling or gameplay modes. Such is the popularity of modding PC games that its part of the landscape, so much so that developers generally release game editing tools with the game or make them freely available for any user. Valve, who have always been actively involved in... (read more »)
Point and click adventures are a dying bread these days, so much so that what once was a thriving genre is now exclusive to a few titles. Like the ever popular Sam & Max series but if like me, you find the humour a little too forced and the 3D art direction not living up to its 2D predecessor, maybe you should check out Machinarium. Machinarium has been floating around the Internet for a while and its even... (read more »)
It’s day five of the Sniper updates, or day two of the Spy gatecrashing the Sniper updates (personally I think Valve should throw in an Engineer update to really mix things up) and with it comes the “Meet the” video for the Spy. As I’m sure by now everyone has seen it thanks to the Steam forums very own spy, take Valve’s advise and try to act surprised when you watch it the second... (read more »)
For the latest update to the Sniper Class we get a surprise in the form of a Spy update. Following on from yesterday’s Razorback that can kill a spy if he tries to stab you while wearing one, we find out that with the use of one of his new gizmos he can fake death. This makes the spy even trickier than before because not only are you never certain who is or who isn’t a spy, now you’re never... (read more »)
Day three of the Sniper update introduces us to the Razorback, a traditional hand made aboriginal shield. Reminiscent to the shields Chris Redifeld encounters in Resident Evil 5, which are about as much use as a cardboard box, the razorback is only good for one attack. After that it crumbles into pieces, the good news is that to give it an extra kick the shield has been retro fitted with a car battery. Zapping... (read more »)
Day two of the Team Fortress update and we learn more about what to expect from Valve’s touted Sniper Update. Today It’s all about modes and maps, first up is a variation on the Payload game type called Payload Race. Even though there are no specifics of this new mode veterans of the game shouldn’t need any further explanation. For Xbox 360 Orange box users, or for non-Team Fortress 2 players... (read more »)
Of all the TF2 Classes, the Sniper class is my least played class, this is because I can’t snipe worth a damn. You could argue that I’m not good because I don’t spend enough time as a sniper, and because I don’t spend enough time playing as the Sniper I’m not very good at him (Just thinking about this circular logic is enough to make me cross eyed). It could also stem from a deep... (read more »)
Do you fancy working for Valve, one of the best and most influential developers within the PC market? A company that churned out the Half Life series, Team Fortress, Portal and Left 4 Dead? A company where all the employees have to wear head crab hats and call them Lamarr while in the office? Well, OK I made that last bit up but they are on the look out for fresh blood. The position of Steam release engineer has... (read more »)
The Scout class update for Team Fortress 2 is pretty much in the bag, with a lot of the development team already moving on to the next (undisclosed) class and will be available soon. But before this update is even out, there is another planned patch due tomorrow that will fix known bugs and exploits, followed closely by another update at the end of the week that will change the way you store your unlockable... Now that Christmas is done and dusted we can roll onto the next traditional event which is the post Christmas sales. What makes this year’s sales so special is the fact that next year promises to be the worst economic year since 1946, having money is going to be a luxury so spend it while you’ve got it (quite possibly the worst financial advice ever). To take our minds of the doom and gloom Valve is... (read more »)
It’s been all quiet on the TF2 front of late but that’s OK because we all know that the TF2 team at Valve are busy working on promised updated goodies. Just to let us know what’s going on Team Fortress 2 on the PC has just received an update of which the full details can be found here. Other than the PC Valve has also let us know that the XBOX 360 version of Team Fortress 2 will be getting all... (read more »)
Left 4 Dead’s intro movie was one of the visceral zombie clips I’ve seen since the intro to 28 days laters. As it turns out not only was the clip bloody scary it was also educational too. It told you some of the basics you would need to survive the zombie apocalypse yourself, don’t shine lights on witches and any noise will act as a dinner bell and your the main course. Traditional in-game... (read more »)
You might be wondering what this bottle of Grolsch (with iconic swing top stopper) has to do with gaming, or Valve for that matter. In truth it bares no connection to anything except that this very cheeky forum post reminded me of one of their adverts, which for love nor money I can’t find (thanks a lot youtube). Needless to say it was about not rushing things and only releasing stuff when it’s ready.
Anyway a very dedicated Steam community user has gone to the trouble of comparing a selection of Valve statements regarding estimated timescale and the actual time taken to complete each task. The end result is a quite amusing look at why you should probably never promise too much.
