What to do with your NES?

Filed under: Features, Modification, Nintendo |

Where have all the old NES's gone?

We all love DIY right!

Well I know that i’m made to do DIY most weekends by the other half instead of playing on my games consoles, sitting back and relaxing or seeing friends, but has anybody noticed there has been a sudden rise in the amount of people making there own NES (Insert gadget name here).

Well if you haven’t then let me bring you up to date with a few that have stood out over the past month or two!

  1. NES Controller Cellphone Mod
“This is posably the most layzist mod ive ever seen and it looks stupid!”
  2. NES MP3 Player and Speakers
“Now this is a little better, nice idea shame that the speaker part has been rushed”
  3. NES Controller iPod Remote
“OK is it just me or is there no point in doing this as the cable is so short it would be easier if you just use the iPod controls!”
  4. NES Hacked into a Computer Mouse
“Why! I mean most mice aren’t that combatable anyway but making you mouse into a block of plastic come on!”

DIY NES's

And these are just some of the things people have done to the poor NES

Now I bring this up because I was wondering that if Nintendo wasn’t so popular at the moment would these people be doing this? I mean it does seem to be the thing to do these days just take anything that Nintendo has made over the years and turn it into something else!

But saying that there have been some really nice DIY projects, one which sticks in my head is the NES PC,

This guy managed to ram

  • EPIA-800 mini-itx board,
  • 55W laptop style PSU,
  • A convertor to allow a laptop CD-ROM drive to be used on a standard IDE channel,
  • Hard Drive,
  • Ram,
  • and a CD-ROM drive from a laptop.

All into a NES, Now this is so cool and I have talked (a lot) amongst my friends about building such a PC! But have never gotten very far with doing it, but if anybody want to know how to make your own jump over to his site where he has step by step instructions on how he made his NES PC

But lets face it, most DIY projects on paper it seems a really cool thing to do but once it has been made and I say that loosely it looks rubbish but I don’t think this is ever going to stop so all that is left to do is wait for more DIY projects to be made and put online for all of us to see.
